We built a Southland Log Home in Youngstown, FL and could not have been happier with Southland’s customers service throughout the process. The time and advice John Vick provided during and after the sale to the flexibility and responsiveness given by Danielle Whorton from delivery to dry-in. We always felt that we could count on Southland’s support and that included the engineer assigned Evan Disosway, who fielded every call with reliable answers. We have just completed the dry-in and hope to finish the rest in the next couple of months. We agreed to purchase a log home package for a modest size 2 bedroom. It turned out that the cheapist builder we could find was 10k over this which really made it tough.
The begining process was smooth and we were very excited, that did not last long. Before we broke ground our superintendent told us he was leaving the company. The replacement superintendent blew a lot of smoke and told us he would build our dream home on time and on budget. The first of many problems was finishing grading and site improvement.
BUSINESS SERVICES
I actually told them that they should be ashamed to use them. They also billed my insurance company for landscaping work not done by them. They also said that they scrapped the ground which was never done. They also poured a much larger turn around than what we requested and, as such, we did not get a full driveway, but one that just ended and not at the road. This entire time, I was making payments on the house.
Their BuildZoom score of 0 does not rank in the top 50% of Georgia contractors. If you hire a contractor through BuildZoom, that contractor is accountable to us. We can enforce standards of behavior, mediate disputes, and guarantee satisfaction.
Southland is all about the money not the customer.
You may even find yourself dealing with huge liability claims. BuildZoom does the homework for you and helps you hire the right contractor. Our building permit records indicate that Southland Custom Homes has worked on at least 38 projects over the past 3 years. We are a full service Architectural and Construction company for Residential Customers in North Georgia.
They are trying to force me to go with a builder that they do not recommend. On Trust Pilot there are many other reviews for all to read . Before anyone signs a contract I would recommend for you to read up on this company. I am sure after one reads all those negative reviews you will be convinced to find another Log Vendor.
BBB Rating & Accreditation
These people are BAD and you dont find out about it until you give them a 10% NONE REFUNDABLE deposit. Run as fast as you can and dont deal with them. Miracles still happen, especially with Southland's expertise and a builder like Kevin Fox.
This updated review by Southland Log Homes does not accurately reflect my situation. We had two contractors which met a few times before the contract was signed. The builder recommended by SLH was only going to be contracted for the "shell" of the home.
Southland Custom Homes was selected to build my home in Winston, GA. From the beginning, we had issues. They began by digging out for the home in the wrong location despite having walked and flagged it prior. We then had over a month of NO WORK done at all. When we threatened to find a new builder, we were told that we would have to pay 40K to get out of our contract. We did not have that avail so we continued on. It took almost 2 years for our home to be completed.
The house would sit empty and having NO WORK done at all for up to a month at a time. We would call and complain and no one would call back. We would receive bills for items that we did not authorize. We constantly had to ask them for updates when no work was being done. New supervisors would go out of the country for weeks at a time.
New supervisors would come in and tell us that he would try to help, but that we were not alone in it taking upwards of 2 years to complete. We would find issues and ask that they be fixed and it would literally take us going back to the home 3-5 times before it would be fixed. The fixtures that they used were the cheapest item you could find at somewhere like Walmart.
As of July 1, 2008 a majority of contractors performing residential or general contracting work over $2500 must have a professional license issued by the Georgia Secretary of State. Analyzing permits over the last 4 years shows that Southland Custom Homes mostly works on new construction projects. Get bids from the top-rated contractors in your area. All statements concerning insurance, licenses, and bonds are informational only, and are self-reported. I their statement it sounds like they gave me a ton of documents, help and guide lines BEFORE we gave them the deposit. Everything we were given, came to us after we gave them the deposit.

I was informed that there was not enough money to do the grading like we had agreed on, so I came out of pocket to the tune of 8,000 to get it done like we wanted. The next problem came during pouring the footers in the wrong location. After tearing that up they repoured the footers and started the basement. The next problem came when we arrived to discover that the basement did not match the blueprint and was missing a window that we had paid for, never have got reimbursed for that.
